GEO Optimization
A workflow for optimizing content for AI search engines using Agentic SEO — audit, optimize, generate, and measure.
Workflow Overview
GEO optimization works best as a repeatable workflow, not a one-time content tweak. The agent handles every stage in a single conversation — pulling GSC data, analyzing crawled pages, rewriting content, and publishing.
- Audit existing content for AI readiness
- Optimize page structure for cite-worthiness
- Generate new GEO-ready content from briefs
- Measure results through Search Console
This page covers the practical workflow. For the theory behind AI search citation, start with the GEO concepts page.
Step 1: Audit Content for AI Readiness
Crawl your site and sync GSC data first. Then ask the agent to evaluate your top pages for cite-worthy structure: direct answers, schema markup, factual specificity, and heading clarity.
“Audit my top 20 pages for AI search readiness — which ones could appear in AI overviews?”
The agent uses site_context and gsc_query to review crawled pages, returning a ranked list with specific issues per page.
Re-crawl your site if the last crawl is more than two weeks old, especially after publishing or updating pages.
Focus on pages ranking in positions 4-15 for informational queries. These have established relevance but room to gain visibility through AI overview appearances.
“Find my informational pages ranking between position 4 and 15 — which are the best GEO candidates?”
Combines GSC position data with content analysis to rank pages by GEO opportunity.
Step 2: Optimize Content Structure
Restructure target pages for AI citation without destroying what already ranks. The key changes: lead with a direct answer, add summary blocks, replace vague claims with sourced facts, and add FAQ schema.
"There are various approaches to technical SEO that website owners can consider, and it's important to think about what works best for your specific situation."
"Technical SEO has three foundational areas: crawlability, indexability, and page experience (speed, stability, mobile usability). Fixing crawl issues delivers the fastest ranking improvements."
| Pattern | Why It Works |
|---|---|
| Lead with a direct answer (2-4 sentences) | AI overviews pull from the top of content |
| Numbered steps for processes | HowTo-style lists are frequently cited formats |
| Comparison tables for "X vs Y" queries | Gives AI a machine-readable comparison |
| Specific numbers over vague ranges | Precision signals reliability to AI systems |
| FAQPage and Article schema markup | Machine-readable confirmation of content type |
“Rewrite the introduction of my best-ranking article to be more cite-worthy for AI engines”
The agent rewrites the opening to lead with a declarative answer and specific facts while preserving keyword targeting.
Step 3: Generate GEO-Ready Content
For uncovered topics, use the brief generator and article writer to produce content that is GEO-structured from the start. The brief includes direct-answer openers, recommended FAQ sections, and schema guidance.
“Generate a GEO-optimized content brief for [topic] that targets both Google and AI search”
Uses brief_generator to produce a brief with GEO structure, FAQ questions, schema recommendations, and on-page SEO guidance.
“Write a complete article from this brief, structured for AI overview citation”
Uses article_writer with your writing style profile to produce a draft with direct-answer opening, sourced facts, and FAQ sections.
Step 4: Measure Results in GSC
Sync GSC data regularly after publishing optimized content. The clearest signals for GEO impact: rising impressions without proportional click growth (content cited in AI overviews), and position improvements on informational queries.
“Show me pages where impressions grew but clicks didn't over the last 90 days”
This pattern indicates AI overviews or featured snippets are citing your content — users get answers without clicking through.
Before making structural GEO changes, check the page's current GSC performance. Keep the keyword targeting, heading hierarchy, and internal links that contribute to its rank. Add GEO signals on top — don't replace what works.
GSC data has a 2-3 day delay, and re-crawls take additional time. Allow 3-4 weeks after publishing before expecting movement in Search Console.
